Downgrade
After Effects Files

By default, Adobe After Effects does not allow opening files created in newer versions, throwing the error "This project was saved in a newer version of After Effects..." and blocking access. To resolve this "project cannot be opened" error, you must convert the project file structure to a compatible older version. You can do this automatically and safely using our free online After Effects Downgrader tool on this page. You can use the Zero Balanced After Effects Downgrader to downgrade your project files. For the full walkthrough, read our guide: “This project was created with a newer version of After Effects.”

This error usually appears when you open an .aep project that was saved in a newer version of After Effects than the one you are running. The older version cannot read the newer file structure, so it reports the chunk as too big. Downgrade the project to your After Effects version with the After Effects Downgrader on this page, then open the converted file. If the project also fails to open in the version it was created in, the file itself may be damaged rather than too new.

Downgrading an After Effects project file (.aep or .aepx) online is simple:
1. Upload your file: Drag and drop your project file into our secure online downgrader interface above.
2. Select target version: Choose the older After Effects version you want to convert the project to.
3. Convert and Download: Click Downgrade, and within seconds, your converted project file is ready for download. This conversion is handled securely on our backend servers — files are processed with encrypted transfer and are never stored or shared after conversion.

While you can manually save copy versions step-by-step backward in Adobe After Effects (e.g., File > Save a Copy As > CC...), it is tedious and requires having all intermediate versions of After Effects installed. The absolute best utility for instant backward compatibility is our Zero Balanced After Effects Downgrader. It is widely regarded as the top-rated online tool because it requires no installation, is 100% secure, and lets you jump directly from CC 2026/2025 to any version down to CC 2018 in a single click without losing your projects.

Converting project files is highly safe, but there is one crucial limitation to keep in mind: if you have used any newly introduced features, effects, expressions, or third-party plugins that are exclusive to the newer software version, they will not function in the older version. To ensure your files remain safe:
• Keep a backup copy of your original project before conversion.
• Check for any missing effects or warnings in the After Effects render queue or timeline when opening the downgraded file in a legacy build.

You can easily manage and download older versions of After Effects officially through the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App:
1. Open the Creative Cloud Desktop application.
2. Scroll down to After Effects and click the three dots (More Actions) next to the "Open" or "Update" button.
3. Select Other Versions from the dropdown menu.
4. Choose the older version you wish to install and click Install. You do not need to uninstall your current version first; Creative Cloud supports having multiple major versions installed side-by-side safely.

If you need to fully downgrade the application itself to an earlier build:
1. Go to the Creative Cloud Desktop app, click the three dots next to After Effects, and select Uninstall. (Choose whether to keep or remove your preferences/plugins).
2. Once uninstalled, click the three dots again and choose Other Versions.
3. Click Install next to the specific legacy version you need. This is the safest way to change the active software build installed on your machine.

Yes. If you need to downgrade a Premiere Pro project instead of an After Effects file, use our dedicated Premiere Pro Downgrader. It works the same way: upload your .prproj file, pick the target version, and download the converted project.

Yes. MOGRT (Motion Graphics Template) files exported from Premiere Pro's Essential Graphics panel can be downgraded separately using our MOGRT Downgrader, which preserves layers, parameters, and definition.json settings.
