Error 26 :: 280 — “This preset was created with a later version of After Effects”
What the error means, and two ways to fix it.
Also shows up as “effect preset requires a newer version,” “this .ffx file won't load in an older After Effects,” or a plain “could not be imported” dialog — same issue, different wording.
Why this happens
Every .ffx effect preset carries a version marker for the After Effects release that saved it. When you try to load the preset, After Effects checks that marker first — before it even looks at the effect settings inside — and refuses the file outright if the marker is newer than what your installed copy supports. It doesn't matter whether the preset only uses effects your version already has; the version check happens regardless.
Fix 1: Recreate the preset in your installed version
If you know which effect and parameter values the preset applies, you can manually apply the same effect in your older, installed copy of After Effects and save it again as a new preset from the Effects & Presets panel. This works, but it's slow, error-prone for anything with many parameters, and only possible if you already know exactly what the original preset changed.
Fix 2: Use an online downgrader
If you don't know the original settings, or just want it fixed in seconds, our FFX Downgrader rewrites the preset's version marker directly, so the copy of After Effects you already have installed will open it — with the actual effect settings inside left untouched. It converts to any version from AE 2026 all the way back to CS6. Your preset is processed on our servers over an encrypted connection. Presets of any size are supported, and presets up to 50KB convert free.
FAQ
Why can't I open a newer .ffx preset in an older version of After Effects?
Every .ffx effect preset stores a version marker for the After Effects release that saved it. Older builds check this marker before loading the preset and refuse it — thrown as error 26 :: 280 — rather than risk applying settings from a format they don't fully understand, even when the preset itself would actually work fine.
How do I downgrade a .ffx preset without installing the newer version?
Adobe doesn't offer a built-in way to re-save a single effect preset for an older After Effects version the way it does for whole projects. An online FFX downgrader rewrites the preset's version marker directly, so the version of After Effects you already have installed will open it.
Will I lose effect settings when downgrading a .ffx preset?
No — downgrading only rewrites the version marker, not the effect settings themselves. The one exception is if the preset uses an effect or parameter that didn't exist yet in the older version; that specific setting can still be rejected or load with a default value.
